Global Regulatory Challenges for 2024

On 15 November, Olivia and I had the privilege to present an Inform session on global regulatory challenges for 2024 at the SCS Formulate event.  We know that not everyone would have been able to attend and so we’d like to share with you our thoughts about what lies ahead and how brands can prepare.

In preparing for the presentation I looked back at what our customers have found challenging in 2023 and took a glance at the focus areas of the authorities in key geographic areas. In doing this I found that the key past, present and future challenges fit into four categories: ingredient management, labelling, claims and packaging and it is these which formed the basis of the session.

Looking both at 2023 and the future, many of the key topics within these categories are already featuring at EU level but, as we know, where the EU leads, often other global regions follow.  Therefore, many of the key EU challenges are likely (if not already being discussed) to become challenges for global industry as well. But in any case, we usually find that whichever of the following it is, this information is largely transferable to help you comply in any region.

  • Understanding if a material might be a microplastic and how it behaves in the formula;

  • Knowing if ingredients in your portfolio have or are proposed to have hazardous classifications;

  • Knowing if you use recycled content in your packaging and how much; or

  • Knowing if your packaging components can be separated and are recyclable;

Once you know the intricate detail of your product, you can utilise that knowledge to comply anywhere, and the burden of compliance is reduced.

We are pleased to offer a copy of the presentation in which you can read more detail of our forecasted global challenges and how we believe you can prepare for the years ahead.
